About Us

Founded on October 18, 1964, the Palos Verdes/South Bay Alumni Chapter of Mu Phi Epsilon continues the fraternity’s mission to advance the art of music through education, performance, and community support.

Our members—over 55 musicians ranging in age from 25 to 80—include conductors, composers, educators, performers, and scholars dedicated to enriching the musical life of the South Bay.

Notable members include Frances Steiner, the first woman to conduct an orchestra at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion (1977) and recipient of the Elizabeth Mathias Award (1998). Early members David Champion and Marshall Bialosky were among Mu Phi Epsilon’s first male members and helped found the Gamma Sigma Chapter at California State University, Dominguez Hills.

Several members have served on the Mu Phi Epsilon Foundation Board and International Executive Office, including Eva Brundin, David Champion, Lenita McCallum, and Ruth Cuccia. ACME members Lenita McCallum, Joanna Nachef, and Anli Lin Tong also represent the chapter’s leadership in the arts.

Through scholarships, patron contributions, and community grants, our chapter supports local schools and musical organizations—donating more than $13,000 in 2016–2017 alone to advance music education in the South Bay.
